Silverside Church is a 176 year old caring, unique community that tries to understand and respond to the teachings attributed to Jesus of Nazareth and to the God whose teachings and ministries Jesus revealed. Compassion and social justice guide how we make an impact, and aesthetics help us visualize and express the mysteries of life and spirituality. Most of us see ourselves as "progressive seekers" (click on Progressive Christianity.Org to your right), and we enthusiastically endorse the work of Karen Armstrong and others in their development of the Charter for Compassion (click on Charter for Compassion to your right).
We encourage our members to claim their own theological perspectives. We are a community that celebrates diversity. Any seeker is warmly embraced, regardless of ethnicity or cultural background, sexual orientation, economic situation, or previous religious experience, including no religious background at all.

Our Sunday Gatherings are key both to understanding who the church is as well as what the church is about. Sermons are intended to cause hearers to think seriously about where they stand on the issue of the day and what action, if any, should be taken in response; our Pastor presents his sermons at three different points during a Gathering using a preaching method he developed called “The Segmented Sermon.” The Sunday sermon doesn’t stand alone; it is complemented and supported by beautifully chosen and presented choral and instrumental music.
Music has long been regarded as integral to the enjoyment and the inspiration of the Gathering. Be sure to read Melissa Heieie’s description of the Silverside music program by clicking on the “Music” link in the menu bar above.
The best way to get to know us is to visit with us. We look forward to welcoming you to any Gathering or other event. You will be warmly welcomed.
Our site photographers are Margaret Walker and Bill Westerhoff whose striking works are often on display at the church and often for sale, framed or unframed, to use in your home or office or to give as gifts.
