Our Environmental Efforts

Silverside Church realizes that taking care of our Planet is both responsible and sane.  Some of us see God as the creative force that brought the world into being through the amazing processes of evolution, and we see caring for our habitat as a way of honoring the Creator.

We have been trying for the last couple of years to increase ways we can heal and otherwise help our Planet.  Some of our current efforts are listed below.

  1. By the spring of 2010, we expect to have solar panels installed that will eventually provide for all of our electric needs through entirely renewable solar power.  In fact, we will have power to share!

  2. We participate in curbside recycling through the Delaware Solid Waste Authority.

  3. Sunday bulletins are printed on 100% recycled paper with a recycling bin available as members, friends, and visitors leave our Gatherings.

  4. Fair Trade coffees served and sold in our Fair Trade Coffee Shop are also organic.

  5. Members and friends often keep their own glass mugs in the Coffee Shop rather than using paper cups on Sundays and Wednesdays.

  6. Members and friends carpool, cycle, and walk to church when possible.

  7. Various aspects of environmentalism are often mentioned in sermons and are frequent discussion subjects at Sunday Forums and Wednesday evening discussions.

  8. Our web host is Green, operating exclusively on renewable energy sources.

  9. Our monthly newsletter is posted online and sent out via email to all those who have computers in their homes; paper copies are only made and mailed to those who have no computer access.
