A Toddler's Paradise: Was a Turkish Getaway Worth It?
As a parent of two energetic toddlers, I've learned that even the simplest trip can feel like an epic adventure. So, when my husband and I decided to take a break from our hectic lives, we chose a four-hour flight to Turkey with our little ones. Was it worth it? Absolutely, and here's why.
The Flight: A Smooth Start
We opted for an early morning flight, knowing that an early start would be key to a stress-free journey. Security was a breeze, thanks to the efficient scanners at Gatwick, and the flight itself was surprisingly calm. The four-year-old was well-behaved, while the two-year-old's hyperactivity kept us entertained. The full flight of young families meant we all survived together, and the clean, efficient airport in Dalaman made our arrival a breeze.
Hotel Choice: A Toddler-Friendly Escape
For a short break, I wanted to avoid the pressure of seeing 'the sights'. So, I chose an all-inclusive resort with great scenery and plenty to keep the kids entertained. XO Cape Arnna was a hit, with its teepee in our room, splash pad, waterpark, and even a trapeze. The kids loved the chips, ketchup, and beaches, especially the hidden Flamingo Beach with its shallow waters and toddler play area.
The Kids Club: A Mixed Bag
The kids club was a mixed bag. While it was well-designed with a soft play area, there was little supervision, and many kids were glued to video games. I found it a little depressing, but it's a common issue in many resorts. The club is well-intentioned, but it's not always the right fit for every family.
Adult Time: A Well-Deserved Break
XO Cape Arnna caters to both kids and adults. The adults-only area with a pool, bar, and restaurant was a welcome respite. The well-equipped gym and spa were also a bonus. While the buffet restaurant had something for everyone, the a la carte options were more adult-oriented, which was a relief after a long day of entertaining the kids.
Cheating the Time Difference
One of the biggest surprises was the late opening of the a la carte restaurants. But, thanks to the time difference, we were able to keep the kids on British time. This meant we could enjoy a late dinner without the kids getting too tired. While the menus were limited, we managed to sneak in some fruit at breakfast, and the kids loved the chips and burgers.
The Verdict: A Mental Break
I questioned the sanity of a long-haul trip with toddlers, but it was actually ideal. The short break gave us a much-needed mental break from daily life. We didn't have time to get bored, and the all-inclusive nature meant we didn't have to worry about planning activities. It was a refreshing change, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Looking Ahead
While the trip was short, it left us with a renewed sense of energy and a desire to explore more. The experience has made me realize that sometimes, a break doesn't have to be grand to be meaningful. It's the little moments, like a splash in the sea or a chip in the sand, that make the biggest difference. So, to all the parents out there, I say: take that break, even if it's just for a long weekend. Your sanity will thank you for it.
